Fragrance:  Clean, fresh, woodsy, with a pure, slightly sweet, green fragrance—the unique, intoxicating smell of a Hawaiian rainforest is treasured equally by both women and men.

The Story:  Maile leaves are fragrant when bruised or crushed and smells like the common non-native lauaʻe or maile-scented fern commonly used in landscaping. The flowers also have the same nice fragrance as the leaves. Stripped bark gives a sweet odor resembling vanilla.  All parts of plant contain coumarin, which gives Maile a pleasant fragrance.  Uncle George Na‘ope, the man who co-founded the most famous hula competition in the world, the Merrie Monarch Festival called Maile “the lei of the gods.
