How to Use Essential Oils - A Simple Guide

Are you curious about how essentials work? Would you like to test them out but aren't sure how? Regardless, if you're unsure how to use or apply essential oils, the following guide will help you understand more.

Aromatically

If you're thinking about essential oils, the first thing that comes to mind is usually, using them in aromatherapy. This is because the fragrances of different essential oils are known to affect one's mood when inhaled. If you're looking for your space to be calming and relaxing or if you're looking to spread a scent that will energize you, the most common way to do that is by using a diffuser. Add a few drops, for example, of lavender oil into the water and let the device do its work. The diffuser will evaporate the water and oil mixture to release the scent into the air. There’s no doubt that the fragrance of lavender will surely relax you.

If you don't have a diffuser, a handy trick would be to use cotton balls. Place several drops of the essential oil on a cotton ball or tissue and let it evaporate. You can put it in the corner of your room, and you'll soon feel its effects. If you need a pick-me-up during work, put peppermint oil on a cotton ball and place it on your desk.

Topically

Another general application of essential oils is by putting them directly on the skin, like rubbing rosemary oil on your temples to relieve headaches. It is important to note that some essential oils, like cinnamon, clove, or peppermint, must be diluted first before applying them directly to the skin. You can do so with a carrier oil, like vegetable or nut oil. Water works in dilution too. You should also consider any allergies you might have or if you have sensitive skin.

Safety tips

Because of their potency, you'll have to be cautious when using essential oils. Here are some essential oil safety tips.

  • A few drops will do the trick. Slowly put in just one drop at a time.
  • If it makes contact with your skin and starts to irritate, immediately apply vegetable oil to the area to dilute it.
  • ALWAYS READ LABEL INSTRUCTIONS. Not all oils can be used the same way. Make sure you know the right one to use for your needs.
  • Avoid applying it to sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and nose.
